We loved it - brilliant location! Visited: May 2008

Having stayed previously in 2003, we wondered if it was as nice as we remembered. Well, this place was lovely!

Our room at the back of the house was bright and airy. The bed was large and comfortable, and the bathroom was clean and spacious. We stayed in the front room previously - it was larger and more private with its own outside entrance. It was probably the more preferable of the two, but this last room was still also very comfortable.

The house has been beautifully restored/renovated, obviously with a lot of sympathy for the character of its era. It was a charming and gracious place. The small pool and deck at the back were welcome additions since our last trip. They were too small for swimming, but perfect for cooling down after some very hot days.

Rosemary, the owner, was a gem. She was unobtrusive, but extremely helpful and welcoming. Bernadette, her helper, was also a delight with her friendly and helpful personality. They really proved that it’s the people who make an establishment. These two lovely ladies certainly helped make our stay the pleasure it was.

The location was brilliant. It was a very short walk to the bank/ATM around the corner, and to many fabulous restaurants and bars. We walked each night for dinner/drinks without any hassles. If you’re there for the cricket, it’s also only a short walk to the Queens Park oval. Downtown Port of Spain was also within walking distance.

I can really recommend the Gingerbread House if you’re after something much more special than the usual ‘run-of –the-mill’ hotel.

The Gingerbread was marvelous. Visited: November 2007

The Gingerbread House was a marvelous place to stay in Port-of-Spain. The house itself was charming, with interesting Victorian details.

Restaurants and Pan Yards were within easy walking distance. However, best of all, the family and staff provided great hospitality and friendship.

We will never forget our time reading and sipping coffee on the veranda, looking for birds on the deck and returning 'home' to our cozy room.

It would be near impossible to better this charming home, a veritable utopia. There are super owners to welcome you, and a delightful lady to make your bed and prepare a great breakfast.

My room was large, airy, clean and comfortable with its own bathroom. All is perfect and an absolute must when I return to Port of Spain.

The Gingerbread House is conveniently located, and is a pleasant place to stay. The owner, Rosemary McKay, is very helpful. When we found we (not Rosemary) had messed up our reservation and needed an extra night, she arranged alternate accommodations for us, which turned out to be delightful.

I recommend the Gingerbread House without hesitation.

We enjoyed our stay very much thanks to the homey environment. The location was great for the Carnival. The hosts helped with the information about the city and the area.

This is definitely our "home away from home". Visited: February 2005

My sister and I spent five days at the Gingerbread House. We were greeted warmly and felt right at home the minute we got here.
Bernadette, you are a fabulous woman and cook extraordinaire, a real gem. Hopefully, I can try the corn soup next time around. Rosemary, your smile lights up a room, and Bernard, my lil sis thanks you for showing her where she can find the best doubles in town.

I have stayed in many places and I would give this gem ten stars. If you are looking for a "home away from home" with fabulous accommodations, warmth and hospitality, Gingerbread House is the place!

I have already re-booked for 2006.

A true oasis in the heart of bustling Port of Spain. Visited: December 2003

Being a southerner, I never dreamed I would find in Trinidad the essence of true "southern hospitality." However, this was indeed what was found during a recent visit to The Gingerbread House.

Bernard and Rosemary, the owners, were wonderfully gracious hosts; truly making us feel at home in their home, but never being intrusive.

The rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated. The breakfasts were spectacular, prepared daily by the ever cheerful Bernadette - one morning specially preparing for us the local breakfast of salt fish ( I believe referred to as buljol) and bake. Knowing how much I liked it, she even found me another serving of it for our next breakfast.

In addition to her excellent cooking, Bernadette was also a great source for local advice, such as telling us the best place to have shark and bake when we visited Maracas Bay. After a day in the hustle and bustle of Port of Spain and environs, it was indeed a delight to return to the serenity of The Gingerbread House. You won't be disappointed.

My first day at the Gingerbread House, I was greeted by Hazel and Little Whiskey, the family pet whom I have come to adore. Later, I met Mr. and Mrs. McKay - wonderful folks.

My room was beautiful and very clean, the bathroom was so big you could fit a bedroom set in there. Bernadette prepared my morning meal. And once I had breakfast, I was full until dinner time. This was not your North American breakfast, this was a home cooking fit for a king or queen.

My room was also cleaned each day. I felt so at home. I stayed for ten days, and let me tell you - whenever in Trinidad, this will be my home. Hopefully Whiskey will be around, a dog with personality.

The Gingerbread House is the place to be in Trinidad. But maybe I should keep it a secret because the next thing you know, when I am ready to return, they wil be booked up. I'll take my chances. I already have my RSVP for Carnival 2004.

It was fantastic and comfortable. Visited: March 2003

I visited The Gingerbread House for the first time for Carnival 2003, and the moment I entered, I felt at home. Rosemary was there to greet me with a wonderful smile, and Bernard came in later from a fete and he was equally hospitable. They fed me a wonderful meal of island fare and later Bernard was gracious enough to escort me to the pan competitions and explain all of the goings on to me, a yankee from the US. I was in awe of all the spectacular sounds of pan.

The Gingerbread House was so close to all the festivities of Carnival I could walk to everything. I was so happy to have chosen this place to lay my head on my first visit.

Let me just say, from that moment on, I fell in love not only with Trinidad, but the Gingerbread House. I truly felt like I was part of the family. As a woman traveling alone, the MacKays were always concerned about my well being and safety whereever I went. They even arranged taxis to pick me up and take me to the beach.

I would be remiss not to mention Bernadette, the housekeeper and cook. She was a wonderful woman with personality and an abundance of humor. Her cooking skills were bar none that I have ever tasted and her breakfasts filled me up until dinner time. Try her wonderful corn soup if you visit. It was excellent! I chose to spend my last day in TNT with her and I will tell you I laughed until I cried.

The family pet, Whisky, was also a warm and wonderful entity to the Gingerbread House. I am not a dog lover, but when Whisky would come over to me for a rub, I couldn't resist. I must say I do miss Whisky. He even made me feel like part of the family. When I returned home, I felt like I had left my family behind. Thank God if he so spares, I will return to the Gingerbread House next year for Carnival 2004.

Thanks Rosemary, Bernard, Bernadette and Whisky for making my first time to Trinidad a trip to remember. I have stayed in five-star hotels all over the U.S. and the Caribbean, and if I could give you 6 stars I would. Thanks again, for a wonderful vacation.

This was a fine base for Carnival. Visited: March 2003
Posted by golubki
Anyone looking for a place to stay during Carnival should consider the Gingerbread House. Our demands included convenience to a Carnival judgng point, Queens Park Savannah, downtown and Saint James.

No one could provide all of those, but the Gingerbread House was sort of in the middle of all of the activity- about a block away from a judging point and Grandstand on Ariapita Street. We found the walks to the other destinations to be free and easy- and each one boasted a different assortment of sights.

For example, on the route to Saint James (for CDs or the Harvard Club) there was Saint Theresa's Church, Kappa Drug and a wonderful cheesecake place. On the way to downtown (via Ariapita) we passed the Sweet Lime and Plantation House restaurants, among others, and the Cow Heel Soup center.

Since there were many routes to the Queens Park Savannah, we could pass by the above restaurants and/or Mario's Pizza or a store with homemade ice cream. We like to walk, so we enjoyed these adventures.

On a typical morning, we didn't even know if anyone else was up, but when we arrived at the breakfast table, it was a very short wait before the juice and fruit appeared on the table. The "Bernadette" breakfast typically included an omelet with bacon and toast or croissants and maybe a cinnamon roll (ask for "shark and bake" at least once) and then Trinidadian coffee. Our energy usually lasted until at least the middle of the afternoon!

The air conditioner easily managed the programmed temperature and the cable TV showed coverage of Carnival activities- sometimes live. If you wanted, a wide variety of USA stations were available. Although trying to nail down Carnival information before we left for Trinidad was difficult, we managed to accomplish most of everything we wanted.

Our suggestion is to ask Rosemary in advance regarding your needs. Our feeling is that the Gingerbread House will satisfy most needs. Our room was clean and the service very good, and we met some interesting people in the process.

Rosemary told us beforehand that if we wanted peace and quiet, we probably shouldn't come for Carnival. We found that the earplugs available from a drugstore downtown (better than 31 Db) solved this problem. Also, Rosemary and Bernard seemed to know when we wanted to chat- and when we didn't. They can arrange to have you picked up from the airport- and transportation back there. Whisky, their dog, was also very cordial!

The only place on the island to stay! Visited: September 2002

If it is peace, quiet and friendly company you are looking for, then don't waste your time looking at any other place. It is located a 15-minute walk from all the main streets of Port of Spain, and close to the Botanical Gardens.

This is a perfect retreat, and Rosy made my stay here so very welcome in the three days I stayed. I would not hesitate to recommend Bernadette's breakfasts to the Hilton Hotel.

In summary, it is friendly, warm and cozy. It is right up my alley (and probably your's, too). But don't take my word for it - experience it for yourself. Go on!

This was my second stay and if I thought my first stay was a fluke, the Gingerbread House family proved me wrong.

This house was centrally located with easy access to shopping areas and resturants. It was simply unique, and Bernadette did a wonderful job of keeping it all neat and tidy.

There were three beautiful, clean, cool, spacious guestrooms with cable television which could give any 5 star hotel competition.

The service was second to none, and breakfast was absolutely wonderful. Bernadette really spoiled me with an enormous breakfast. Everyone was friendly and willing to advise guests of places to go according to their interest.

Bernard and Rosemary Mackay have outdone themselves with the creation of this gem. I would recommend this guesthouse to anyone holidaying in Trinidad.

I've been there twice and I'm sure to go again.

What can I say but, "pure pleasure"! Visited: June 2002

My friend and I came for a 5-day stay during the One-day Internationals v. India. From the time we arrived to the time we left, we were made to feel very welcome.

The house was perfectly situated - in town, but away from the hustle and bustle; a perfect, peaceful location, at a very reasonable rate. The rooms were immaculate, cool and comfortable, modern, yet culturally decorated, with cable TV (not that we had time to watch it!). And even though there was not a phone in the room, I did not miss it; we still had use of a phone in the house.

It was a true home away from home. Breakfast was breakfast, lunch and dinner all in one. Would you believe I went to TNT and I had no space for a roti! I was so full!

The Mackays were lovely, friendly and very accommodating people, and their staff was like family, they cannot be called staff! I have been to Trinidad many times and have stayed in big hotels and not even they can compare to the service, hospitality and comfort I felt when I stayed at The Gingerbread House.

It is a gem. I can recommend it to anybody. I almost feel I should keep it quiet though because, it might get too fully booked and where will I stay then? But, the nicer side of me says I want others to have same experience I did.

And our only regret... was that we did not get a chance to take advantage of the Aromatherapy and Reflexology. It was an all-around most pleasant stay.

P.S. I must not forget to give their little dog "Whiskey" a mention. Hey, Mr Cutie!

Bernard and Rosemary have put together a fabulous experience in Port of Spain for a very affordable price. There are three lovely rooms available for rent here. They are very clean, and provide a very hospitable atmosphere.

The morning breakfast is to die for. If you need advice on where to go, where to eat, and what to do, or even where to go running (like I did), Bernard and Rosemary are more than happy to help. The location is great, it is close to the airport and centrally located in Port of Spain.

I will definitely stay here again and will recommend it to all my friends going down to Trinidad.

A most refreshing and relaxing sojourn. Visited: June 2002

After a long day's travel and many delays, we were delighted to be met at the airport in Trinidad by a taxi orgainzed by Rosy and Bernard to take us to the Gingerbread House.

The house itself had been beautifully restored and it quickly became clear that the owners love their home. We sat on the airy porch on arrival and enjoyed a cold beer with Bernard and Rosy.

Our room was perfectly air-conditioned and very spacious and comfortable. We had an excellent night's sleep. We were told to get up at our leisure the next morning and breakfast would be waiting for us when we did arise - which it was. It was a fantastic spread which would keep even the hungriest going for the day.

The Gingerbread House was only a few minutes' walking distance from the cricket grounds where we spend that day. We left our luggage with the Mackeys for the day and another taxi had been arranged by them for our return journey to the airport. While waiting to leave, we were again entertained with beers/minerals and good company on the porch.

I would highly recommend The Gingerbread House as a welcome haven in Port of Spain; you stay in extremely comfortable surroundings and are given top-class care. I hope to get the opportunity to return.

Gracious and most accommodating. Visited: June 2002

Being from New England, I feel I have the right to be a good judge of what I like in a Bed and Breakfast. This property is clean and well maintained.

With its peaked rooflines, high ceilings, Caribbean color scheme, and Gingerbread type detailing, this home stands out amongst the rest, along Carlos Street. The interior, as well as the surrounding outside porch, abounds with Teak wood flooring. The kitchen is brand new, with the latest appliances.

My first morning found me emerging from my room just after 10:00 a.m., as I had worked late in the city, upon my arrival. To my surprise, the staff was more than courteous by preparing me a large breakfast, even though it was closer to lunch.

Bernie and Rosemary were great hosts and offered good conversation. Kudos to Rosemary, where upon my morning of departure, awoke at 5:00 a.m. to prepare me breakfast herself.

My only complaint, other than the fact that my trip was too short, was what I found typical in most of the Caribbean cities I travel to: Barking dogs in the neighborhood. Normally I would just close the windows, but being in the Caribbean, many of the windows are open with wooden louvers, to let the nice breeze through.

All in all, I couldn’t complain. I have always been of the opinion, that if you’re traveling to a foreign location, stay where the locals stay. The high-rise hotels offer everything but the local culture, which one cannot get from the 18th floor.

Bernard and Rosy do everything in their power to make you feel at home from the minute you arrive. I spend my life staying in hotels around the world, so it was an absolute delight to stumble across this traditional Gingerbread House.

Do try it for holidays or business. You are conveniently located near the town of Port of Spain, but it is still quiet and private. The rooms are very comfortable and the breakfasts are just right. The balcony is a wonderful place to finish off the day in friendly conversation with your hosts.

The Gingerbread House is a nice place, with beautiful historic architecture. It is managed by smart owners you can have conversations with, yet at the same time they respect your privacy.

It is quiet, reasonably priced, and offer great rooms with a bathroom. It is a true "home away from home". It is nicer than any hotel I have stayed in during my many trips.
